2006 Objective: Sent sewing supplies to the
native Tarahumara Indians in Mexico to be used for making
marketable and personal items.
2007 Objective: Sent sewing kits to support
International Disaster Areas.
NVON’s “STITCHES FOR SURVIVAL” International
project for 2006-2007 has successfully ended. The first phase was the Tarahumara Indian Project. Members collected beads, lace, hand needles,
scissors, thread, bias tape, pins and colorful cotton or blended cotton
material to send to the Tarahumara Indians in Mexico. The Tarahumara
Indian Project phase was put on hold halfway through 2006 due to the
overwhelming response of members in collecting sewing items for the
Tarahumara Indian women use. At the close of the phase over 143,900
items had been collected. That total included over 3,500 yards of
material and supplies to be used in making useful articles for their
families/and or for sale to supplement the family income.
The next phase of the project was supporting
International Disaster Areas through the United Methodist Church. This
project accepted sewing kits to be sent to any area that has suffered
disaster. Sewing kits included 3 yards of cotton or cotton-blend, solid
color or print fabric, a pair sewing scissors, a package of needles,
spool of thread, and 5-8 matching buttons. A total of 162 kits were
reported being sent. Thanks to all who made the ‘STITCHES FOR SURVIVAL”
project a success. |
